One of the most exciting parts of this season is your engagement photos. But before the fun begins, there’s one question almost every couple asks:
“What should we wear for our engagement session?”
As a Maine wedding and portrait photographer, I’ve seen how the right outfits can completely elevate a session. This guide will help you choose looks that photograph beautifully, and make you feel confident and comfortable in front of the camera.
Your engagement photos should reflect you. If you’re more casual, don’t feel pressured to dress overly formal. If you love dressing up, lean into it. The best photos happen when you feel comfortable and confident in what you’re wearing.
Soft neutrals like ivory, tan, sage, dusty blue, and muted peach photograph beautifully and keep the focus on you. Adding texture - linen, knits, lace, or flowy fabrics - creates depth and movement in your photos.
Your outfits should make sense for where we’re shooting.
Beach sessions pair beautifully with light, flowy fabrics.
Fall sessions shine with layers, sweaters, and boots.
Always dress in a way that feels natural for the setting and weather.
Large logos, graphics, and bright neon tones can distract from your connection. Timeless pieces photograph best and help your images feel just as beautiful years from now.
If time allows, I love when couples bring two looks - one casual and one slightly dressier. It adds variety and lets us capture both playful and romantic moments.
Shoes, accessories, and even nails matter more than you think. Clean, simple details keep the focus on your faces and your connection.
If you can’t move, sit, or walk easily in your outfit - it’s probably not the best choice. Comfort always photographs better.
