One of the most exciting parts of this season is your engagement photos. But before the fun begins, there’s one question every couple asks:

“What should we wear for our engagement session?”

As a Maine wedding and portrait photographer, I’ve seen how the right outfits can completely elevate a photo session. Here’s my go-to guide to help you choose outfits that will look amazing on camera and make you feel confident.

Your engagement photos should feel like you. If you’re more casual, don’t feel like you have to wear a ball gown. If you love dressing up, go for it! Pick clothes that fit your personality and the vibe you want for your photos.

Light neutrals like ivory, tan, sage, dusty blue, and muted peach photograph beautifully and keep the focus on you. Add texture with knits, linen, or lace to give your photos depth and dimension.

Instead of both wearing the exact same color, choose outfits that complement each other. For example, if one person wears a patterned dress, the other can pick a solid color that pulls from the pattern. This creates balance without looking too “matchy-matchy.”

Planning a beach session? Flowy dresses and light fabrics work beautifully. Doing photos in the fall? Cozy sweaters and boots are perfect. Always dress in a way that feels appropriate for where you’ll be and the weather that day.

Logos, large graphics, and neon colors can take the focus away from your connection. Stick to timeless pieces so your photos won’t feel dated in a few years.

I love when couples bring two looks, one casual and one a bit dressier. It gives your gallery variety and allows you to capture both playful and romantic vibes.

Your shoes, accessories, and even nails make a difference in photos. Opt for clean, simple details that won’t steal attention from your faces.

At the end of the day, you should feel confident and comfortable. If you can’t move, sit, or dance in your outfit, it’s probably not the best choice for an engagement session.
